Description:
A fine Bronze Cross of Merit with Swords produced after World War II by Spink & Son Ltd in London, under contract for the Polish Government-in-Exile.
These decorations were awarded to Polish military personnel who continued their service abroad after 1945, in recognition of distinguished wartime or post-war merit while in exile.
The obverse bears the entwined initials “RP” (Rzeczpospolita Polska) within a decorative rope border, over radiating rays between the arms of the cross.
Above the cross are crossed swords, symbolizing bravery in combat.
The reverse is plain – a typical feature of Spink’s post-war production.
This version differs slightly from wartime issues by its darker bronze finish and crisper, more defined casting, reflecting Spink’s high-quality post-war craftsmanship.
Condition:
Very good, original patina with minimal wear.
Ribbon remains original and in excellent condition.
All components intact, no signs of cleaning or restoration.
Historical Note:
Following the end of WWII, the Polish Government-in-Exile continued to function in London, maintaining the right to bestow Polish orders and decorations until 1990.
Spink & Son Ltd was one of its principal suppliers, producing official crosses and medals in small batches for veterans of the Polish Armed Forces in the West and Polish émigré organizations.
These post-war Spink issues are now sought after for their direct link to the exile community and their limited production.
