Medal Design:
Obverse shows the bust of Emperor Karl I with the inscription CAROLVS D.G. IMP. AVST. REX BOH. ETC. ET REX APOST. HVNG.
Reverse bears the laurel and oak wreath surrounding SIGNUM LAUDIS (“Sign of Praise”).
Suspended from the original triangular red-white war ribbon fitted with crossed swords device.

Condition:
Good overall condition with honest age patina and minor wear. The ribbon shows light fraying at edges but remains original and complete. Details on both sides remain clear and well-defined.

Historical and Collectible Significance:
The Signum Laudis was instituted by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1890 to reward acts of bravery and merit. During the reign of Karl I, this version was produced with his portrait and was often awarded for front-line gallantry. The crossed swords denote award for bravery in combat. Highly desirable among collectors of Austro-Hungarian WWI decorations.
